Design Best Practices for Pins

Tips to ensure your design translates perfectly to a physical pin.

✅ DO These Things
  • Keep it simple: Bold, clean designs work best on pins
  • Use clear outlines: Metal borders separate colors and add definition
  • Limit colors: 3-7 colors is ideal for enamel pins
  • Provide color codes: Pantone (PMS) or hex codes ensure accuracy
  • Consider scale: Remember pins are typically 0.75" - 2" in size
  • Use vector art: Ensures scalability and crisp edges
  • Include all fonts: Convert text to outlines or provide font files
❌ Avoid These Common Mistakes
  • Overly complex designs: Too much detail gets lost at small sizes
  • Tiny text: Text smaller than 0.125" (3mm) may be unreadable
  • Gradients: Standard enamel pins can't reproduce gradients (use printed pins instead)
  • Low-resolution images: Pixelated artwork won't translate well
  • Thin lines: Lines thinner than 0.015" may not reproduce clearly
  • Too many colors: More than 10 colors increases cost significantly
  • Missing color separation: Each color needs clear boundaries
